It is my belief that the Realist hyperfocal marking are actually set 
a bit forward of their calculated distance. This is just another way 
of saying that I believe that the Realist somewhat favors close over 
far. When set at the hyperfocal point, objects in the foreground will 
be a bit sharper than those at infinity. For us nature photo types 
this is usually  a good design decision. 

You are right. The hyperfocal point is a good starting point, but 
one often needs to "fudge" the hyperfocal point forwards or 
back to favor the most important area of the image.
