Hi,

It's good to be back after a long absence from the list. I've been
archiving the digests but just started reading them again recently. Anyway
I have a few questions for the list=85especially collectors of older stereo
viewers and images.

I recently encountered a closing of an estate that included a large
photographic image and camera collection from a husband and wife photo
journalist team. Among that estate was an interesting lot that I have
first refusal on. It contains a sliding box viewer similar in design
depicted in Paul Wings "Stereoscope - The First One Hundred Years". On
page 215 of the soft-bound edition you will see the Mignon miniature viewer
for transparencies=85the only viewer found that best resembled the one that =
I
have but is still very different.

The Details: The cardboard box that holds the viewer and one set of slides
measures 12.7cm x 12.7cm x 5.6cm. A blue background label with white
writing in french is titled,=20

     POSITIFS
     Sur verre
     Pour le:
    STEREOSCOPE
       Et la=20
    PROJECTION

The viewer has no markings as to the manufacturer is. The viewer lens
board contains two glass lenses each approximately 3.2cm in diameter and
center-to-center separation measures approximately 6.7cm. The dimensions
of the lens board is approximately is 11.6cm x 4.8cm. It is finished in a
black matte cloth typical of cameras near the turn of the century. The
sliding drawer that holds the glass transparancy is fitted with a piece of
ground glass measuring 10.4cm x 4.4cm (the same dimension of the glass
transparencies). An inserted glass transparency is held in place by a
small brass latch that swings in place. Focusing is accomplished by simply
sliding the box in or out.

The lot also includes several glass transparencies in exceptional quality
with no scratches=85most of which still have fine tissue each stack of
slides. Many of the slides (about 20-25 per box, and at least 11 boxes
depict various site throughout Europe (but mostly France). One interesting
set documents dead soldiers in what appears to be World War I. (I haven't
examined the full contents of each slide set but all appear to be in near
new condition). Physically, each slide measures 10.4cm x 4.4cm. Each
image varies slightly in size but for the most part measures 4.4cm x 4.4cm
with separation varying near 1.5cm. Most are annotated in handwritten
french and appear to be part of emulsion.

My french for lack of a better word "stinks". Each box of slides are
labled as follows:

 PHOTOGRAPHIES
STEREOSCOPIQUES
   Sur verre
 En Tons Chauds

Some labels on the side of each individual slide boxes are:

Editions Stereoecopiques
Aime Bruguiere - Mazamet (tarn)

Chateau de Versailles

Exposition Coloniale Internationale de Paris 1931

Pacades et Jardins

Fontainebleau 1

Fontainebleau 2

Fontainebleau 3

Fontainebleau 4

Paris

Bassins - Grandes Raux

Series B

Interieurs - Ier groupe

That's about it..this is certainly far from any areas of my expertise so if
anyone can help shed some light on the value is, what a reasonable offer to
the widow may be and if there is any collectible value here I would
certainly appreciate it. =20

Thanks again,

Tim Smith (n1btq@xxxxxxxx)
