It is an article by world-class collector and NSA member, Jack Naylor about
one of the rarest cameras of all times, a gold plated Leica Luxus with
matching gold Stereoly stereo attachment (beam splitter) Jack tells the
story about how he traveled to Germany to acquire this camera.
I posted the following related story in photo-3d (95/6/11):
The latest KEH catalog (KEH is "America's largest used camera dealer")
there is an interview with Jack Naylor, the famous camera collector. He
recently sold part of his collection to the Japanese government for $6
million. The article is illustrated with three cameras, two of which are
stereo cameras:
- "Homeos, by Jules Richard-Paris was the first commercially produced 35 mm
stereo camera. Made in 1914, it used the short ends of movie film to
produce 27 stereo pairs of 54 half frame exposures. Today's value is about
$35,000."
And for the big collectors:
- "The Leica Luxus Stereo is one of the world's rarest cameras. Only 94
Leica Luxus cameras, gold plated and covered with red, blue, green or brown
lizard skin, were made from 1929 to 1932. Only one of them was made with a
gold plated stereo attachment. The Leica Luxus outfit includes the camera
with red lizard skin, a gold Stereoly stereo attachment, a gold
rangefinder, a red leather pouch and a gold lens cap. There have been
offers exceeding $100,000 for the Luxus outfit"
