NSA & 7p modifications to metal viewers or carriers

At the Technical Trio workshop at NSA '97 I'll be doing a section on basic
tools for a home workshop oriented towards fixing or modifying camera and
projection hardware. (Note: this isn't a how-to workshop-- I'm not that
good. It will show people some basic tools for getting started-- e.g.
if I can do it, anyone can do it.) Also, I have accumulated 25 catalogs
from each of the major equipment and optical mail order companies,
including American Science and Surplus (standard and optical catalog),
Edmund (optical catalog), Fargo Enterprise (camera repair tools), Berg
(miniature mechanical components for scratch building), Mouser
Electronics, Micro-Mark (small tools), Harbor Tools (misc tools), and
perhaps a few others). The catalogs will be part of the information
packets distributed to people attending the workshop.

The other members of the Technical Trio, John B and Sam Smith, are the
keynote presenters. John will be doing a highly technical program on
stereo perspective-- you'll need some math chops for this one. I've seen
the advance material, and it's great info! Sam will be showing some of his
incredible camera creations (and the images taken by them) via 3D
projection, and several will be along in person.

We're scheduled from 1-3 on Saturday.

End of workshop pitch...

Re modifying something metal to 7p, you can save a bunch of time and
effort buying a $12 Radio Shack metal nibbler. A row two bites deep to the
left, and two bites deep to the right and you have 7p from 5p. You don't
even have to measure anything. Then just take a few minutes to dress the
corners with a fine tooth metal file. I modified my nibbler by using a
metal cut-off disk on a Dremel and removing about 1/8 inch from the top of
the nibbler. This way the nibbler's cutter fits inside a Kodaslide carrier
without having to bend the carrier open.
