House of Wax and Week of 3-D at GEH

On Saturday, May 31 I attended a screening of House of Wax in 3D at the
Dryden Theater of the George Eastman House in Rochester with my family.
This was the third time, I had seen HoW in 3-D in Rochester some twenty
years ago, again in Atlanta for NSA '95. The Dryden Theater had never done
polarized 3D before, only anaglyph for a few movies, so I wasn't sure what
to expect. They had to obtain a silver screen from CA as well as the
projection adapter. This was a side-by-side anamorphic print of the film.

There was a sellout crowd for the movie, which was introduced by one of the
staff, who closed her talk saying that "if you don't see 3-D right away,
don't worry. Just turn your glasses around. They only work one way." Oh,
well. :--)

The movie was well-received, with the paddle ball and can-can scenes
eliciting the best responses. Didn't seem as good as Atlanta '95, but we
sat in the balcony. Bright, well-aligned image and of course synched.

They did announce that since they have the screen now they will be
presenting more polarized 3-D, including the Hallowe'en Night 3-D showing
of Andy Warhol's Frankenstein (or whatever its name is now). Mark Betz of
the Museum also said they plan a Week of 3-D sometime in '98. Anybody
wanna do another trip to Rochester?

The Dryden shows a different classic movie about every night. Check their
