Alex Klein writes in Digest 2094:

>Petrol Ether is a mixture of Pentane (C5 H12) and Hexane (C6 H14).

Hi Alex,

I checked Pentane. OSHA PEL: 1000PPM; STEL: 750PPM; V.D.: 2.5; F.P.: -50
DEG. C

Acute health effects: May be poisonous if inhaled. Vapors may exclude
oxygen from lungs and cause dizziness or suffocation. Contact may irritate
or burn skin and eyes. Overexposure may cause Central Nervous System
depression.

I'm not sure if there are any "safe" solvents for oils.

I also thought of a quick way to tell if you have an oil-containing
solvent. (Some of the starting fluids and lantern fuels, for instance)
Spray or dip a clean piece of slide glass then let it dry. If it leaves an
oily residue, you would be defeating your purpose by using it.

Best regards,
Bill Davis
