I'm inclined to believe that different parts of the brain are employed for
motion parallax and stereoscopic vision. If that were not the case, then
Pulfrich wouldn't add anything to your perception of a properly set up
scene for Pulfrich viewing.

There was at least one system for "3D video" being promoted a year or two
(or more) back, which used rapid alternation of two views on a 2D display
(but no shutter glasses for viewing). There may have been one which used
*vertical* displacement. I never saw a demo.
