Tom Martin, suggesting possible types of subjects for upcoming competition,
themed "After Hours":
>People or animals sleeping
>People at evening events (dining, drinking, dancing, sporting events)
>Animals that are only active at night
>City lights and store fronts
>People illuminated by street lamps or porch lights
>Evening rituals (brushing your teeth, watching TV, reading your email,
>etc.)
Then he states:
>Now a little while ago, there were several people on the List boasting
>about how much film they shot last year. Unfortunately, I haven=92t seen
>many entries from that crowd.
I thought, maybe they heard that "Snapshooter Bill" was entering some of
his several hundred Kodak slides from the past year and were frightened off.
Then George T. responds with the real reason:
>DrT (recognized champion in the film-burning race) replies:

>Maybe that's because we don't have any pictures of sleeping cats or dogs!

I'm motivated to see how my night shots stack up against those of others.

Hmm, I shoot a dozen or two rolls per year and I have lots of night shots
to choose from. Of course, with long exposures, the Kodak is excellent. I
set it on the tripod, trip the shutter and by the time it comes unstuck, I
have my exposure. Great for star trails, too. :-^)

>Thrid, AND EVEN MOST IMPORTANT, I am only given an 1-2 month advance notice

But that's several hundred picture's worth at the rate you "burn film".
How about just taking a picture of the bonfire you can build with green
boxes in a month?

Aw shucks, George. Who's gonna be my competition if you don't enter? I
don't have any sleeping animals, nocturnal animals or evening rituals (me
scratching myself?) either, but what about city streets, fireworks,
floodlit monuments, time exposures of carnivals or fairs? Wedding parties,
neighborhood festivals, etc. This is prime time for those opportunities!
Grab the tripod, screw on the timer (or cable) and head out!
Or are you going to let me walk away with that First Prize REALIST-LOGO
CAP? If you don't enter (maybe even if you do :--)) I could end up with
it. A Kodak owner like I might not treat a hat like that with the respect
you may feel it deserves (although at least I won't be knocking it off
every time I take a picture :--)).
Since George won't enter, who will send their pix up against mine? All
I've got are ones I took with my "beginner's camera", that much-maligned
Kodak. Surely someone with one of the many better cameras will easily kick
my butt and get that hat. Or will they?
Best regards,
Bill Davis
