Sorry for taking so long to add to the discussion, I have been working
on a home remodeling project that has taken most of my time.
In a recent posting, George Themelis declines to enter the "After Hours"
3D photo competition and lists several reasons that it was just not for
him. I did want to address the three contentions that he made against
entering the competition, so that those people who are considering
entering will know the background behind the rules.
First, I am sorry to hear that George has found the theme of night time
activities to be such a difficult subject to photograph. Night time was
selected as the theme to give the entrants an opportunity to experiment
with flash photography and long exposures, an area that many of our
members have not had a chance to thoroughly explore. The few examples of
possible photo situations that I provided were merely thought provokers
to get the creative juices flowing. I am sure that the night owls in
our group will be able to come up with many more creative night time
photo subjects than those that I gave. A few good ones have already been
mentioned by others on the list.
Second, the purpose of our competition is not to award 3D photographers
for past accomplishments, but to encourage our members to get out and
take pictures to improve their photographic skills! Certainly there are
many people who have an outstanding collection of photos that they have
taken over the years, but to take a photograph that they took 15 years
ago and enter it in a competition will contribute little to their
knowledge of 3D photography. Not to penalize an entrant who recently
took the perfect night time photo and make them recreate that photo just
for the competition, we decided to allow photos taken as long as one
year ago to be entered. It is my personal feeling that people with
excellent older photos should show them in portfolios or in slide shows
at group meetings to show newer members their past accomplishments.
There is a lot of quality 3D hidden away in drawers and closets that
people would like to see. Perhaps other competitions are designed to
credit lifetime achievement instead of current works. Ours is not.
Third, the reason for the somewhat sort notice on the deadline for
entering the competition (the deadline is 1 August, 1997) was made
simply because that is two weeks before our next scheduled meeting in
August where we will show the entered photos. I do realize that some
photographers will plan and experiment for months looking for the right
combinations of technique, subject, and composure for making that
winning photograph. However, from my experiences in obtaining my
undergraduate degree in Still Photography and Motion Picture Film (that
was many years ago , but I am sure that it has not changed), we were
always given the assignment for our final project at the beginning of
each semester and a majority of the students (myself included) always
put off starting their final project until two weeks before it was due.
That is human nature. Most people will put off serious study of the
intended project until the deadline demands it. The two months notice
will give most people a chance to shoot a test roll of film and enough
time to shoot one more to get it right. My apologies to the dedicated
few who will need 12 months to perfect their ideas, but the members in
our group thought that 2 months would be enough time for them.
If the idea of getting out and shooting some night time 3D appeals to
anyone who has not requested an entry form, please email me and I will
send you one. The competition is open to all, including George if he
should change his mind.
Cordially,
Tom Martin
