RE: Why 3-D?

There's been some excellent discussion on this topic - here's my $0.02:

The idea behind HDTV (politics and greed aside) is to improve the
viewer's
"immersion" into the experience. If it could be made to work,
stereoscopic
movies would serve this purpose very well. And I agree with comments
that, with enough resources and knowledge, some very impressive motion
scenes could be made, perhaps even a whole feature-length film. But
the restrictions imposed to make good stereo are just too much. Even
ignoring questions of varying interocular distances and depth of field,
for
conventional stereo projection the problems of head movement and
"stretch" are enough to make most people give up in far less than two
hours.

The problem with doing only parts of a film in stereo is that the change
from flat to 3D and back destroys the immersiveness. And the problem
with feature-length, full stereo is that nobody wants to be "immersed"
that long with all these problems. So the answer is to make the best
possible stereoscopic movies of appropriate lengths. If they're done
right they'll be successful, and that (and only that) will encourage the
development of improved techniques (and "improved" audiences).
