Another technique is the "virtual monopod".  Use a sturdy string/cord attached
to your camera (say, at the tripod mount) and drop it to the floor.  Step
on it, and gently pull the camera upward, and hold it with some tension
against the cord.

This is supposed to work, but haven't tried it myself (I've a conventional
monopod which I like to use sometimes).  I'm not sure if anything other than
a tripod (or C-clamp equivalent, etc) would work for 10 seconds though.
