Ragtime stereoscope

   A couple friends saw the play Ragtime in Los Angeles and told
me that the opening scene features a gigantic stereoscope and a child
looking through a stereoscope and you see two views which coalesce into one 
(presumably stereo).  I think they said that the scene was of his family.  
I don't know much about Ragtime but I think the story starts at the turn 
of the century so the stereoscope is appopriate for the period.  Anyone
have more information about this?
