That's about how I'd do the alignment. I mount the prints rectangular
(not rounded at the top), so I don't need a template - just use a regular
office paper cutter. (Ordinarily I just use the scale on the cutter to trim
the prints to 3 inches wide.)

I've never tried temporary adhesive. My prints mounted with Scotch
double-stick tape are still in good shape after 5+ years - when you first lay
the prints down, if you set them down very gently without pressing, you can
often pull them up and reposition them. Then when they're lined up properly,
press down hard for a permanent mount.
