Viewmaster photos

In digest 2170 I  read mention of taking Viewmaster photos with a twin SLR 
setup.  Well, I have two SLRs which are pretty well matched.  What 
techniques are used to shoot the slides and trim them down to Viewmaster 
chip size?  Does Viewmaster use the 35mm slides as "inter-negatives" to 
reproduce the scenes in a smaller format?  Is there some trick to 
photographing a scene in a certain quadrant of the viewable area so you 
can trim down the film later?  I would love to be able to make up some 
Viewmaster reels of my sons.  Any tips, suggestions or articles I can 
beg/borrow/buy would be greatly appreciated.  I think this could be a fun 
project!
