RBT vs NIKON
Reasons for not using Nikons for Siamesing into stereo:
1. You will lose your famous worldwide Nikon warranty! Any modifications
will mean you are left with either no warranty or one by the person who
modified it. I believe RBT offers excellent warranty service
2. Any Mod of a new Nikon must be done with someone who has complete
knowledge of the workings of the camera. Anyone who can take it apart and
put it back together blindfolded would qualify, but that expertise costs
both time and money.
3. The mechanical configuration of MOST SLRs is such that they do not merge
together well. Let's face it, none of these cameras were designed to be cut
in half and joined. Very few cameras will actually link up properly and have
the approprate advance and space for additional parts. I believe RBT chooses
the cameras they do with these point in mind.
4. Expense. Paying a highly qualified Nikon technician to make a single
protoype would be rediculous. Jon's estimate of $5000 to $6000 may have been
kind!
Converting an existing stereo camera to take Nikon lenses is a different
matter, as it's both feasable and reasonable. I can see wanting to use the
best quality optics, but if 1/125th is the same on a Yashika as it is on a
Nikon, what difference does it make?
