I have been told that the ISO number is based on a procedure developed for B&W
and may not always be a prudent point of comparison, especially between
dissimilar technologies.  I suspect it is also inexpensive to perform as most
other film "specs" are that are commonly quoted.  eg. using "resolution" vs
"MTF".
But then I may be misinformed or unduly cynical.
