I know that Marvin wrote the above with friendly consideration, but for
those of you who don=92t understand my position on JPS, I=92m not actuall=
y
against JPS. What I am against is poor quality stereoscopic images on
the Web. Stereo photographers who are evaluating digital technology are
judging the image quality by what they see on the web, and it=92s not a
pretty sight.

If you publish the images in JPS format, Marvin, I just have two
requests:=20

1) Publish the links in your HTML in a way that allows viewers to
retrieve them with or without depthcharge. If a browser has depthcharge
registered as a helper application, then it will work correctly with
normal image links. If someone wants to reformat the images, then they
can save the files as JPEG.

2) Please publish the images with the same quality as those I delivered
to you. I believe that they were output at 664 wide by 728 high for
each field, and stored as JPEG IMAGES WITH NO COMPRESSION SELECTED.=20
Therefore, if they were published as 1328 X 728 JPS files with no
compression, then no apologies, even in jest, need to be offered to me.

I suspect that you may not be inclined to publish them with no
compression because they would be quite large. And this is my point:
JPS forces the image authors to choose between size and quality.=20
Contrary to popular myth, this is not a required tradeoff. There do
exist lossless images compression techniques, which, even though they do
not achieve the ratios offered by JPEG and others, will maintain high
image quality with significant space savings for most subject matter.
(BTW, using PKZIP on a BMP or TIFF image does NOT work well, but that is
not what I am talking about).

Thanks for the mention in your post. Those interested in high quality
