New York Stereoscopic Society Meeting Report
- From: P3D Bill Burns <billb@xxxxxxxxx>
- Subject: New York Stereoscopic Society Meeting Report
- Date: Fri, 19 Sep 1997 23:01:29 -0400
I just returned from the inaugural meeting of the New York Stereoscopic
Society, held at the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan.
Organized by Greg Dinkins and Eric Drysdale (thanks, guys!), the meeting
began with a brief introduction of the aims of the society by Greg, and
continued with a twin-35mm presentation by David Hutchison of The
Dimensional Frontier, a collection of some of his favorite 3D slides,
including behind-the-scenes shots of miniatures and models from many
science fiction movies. 3D glasses were supplied to the capacity crowd
of about 80 stereo fans and others courtesy of VRex.
After a short break to set up the TDC projector, we were treated to a
showing of the 1947 classic Highway USA with the original soundtrack
narrated by Paul Harvey. Despite the somewhat jingoistic commentary
(not surprising for the time period), the show featured some great
images of the American countryside as seen from the road. The show was
originally photographed on 5" x 7" Kodachrome, using exposures up to ten
seconds on some shots to allow for small apertures and great depth of
field. The version we saw was reduced to Realist format slides in the
early 50's, and so was perhaps not as spectacular as the original. At
one point, the narrator notes that two people are killed in traffic
accidents during the course of the slide show. It's a good thing this
show is not often projected.
Reel 3D made catalogs available for each attendee, and the
not-yet-present Jon Golden sent sample RBT mounts for everyone. Jon is
the featured presenter at the next meeting, to be held in January 1998,
and it's also planned to show members' slides as the society evolves.
Many thanks to Greg and Eric (and all the others involved) for a
successful and enjoyable meeting.
