In the case of JPS, the header is optional information. It's only needed if
the saved file departs in some fashion from the established default. There
are stereo formats for BMP (BMS), and PNG (PNS). Neither of which use
headers, but probably could if someone wanted the header information for
some reason. The big problem with headers is that they are lost if a file is
resaved with any typical graphics program. They have to specifically be
added by a special utility. I choose to not bother with headers 98% of the
time. Use of the default format still results in a file that can be viewed
in all the usual ways and the process is so simple.
