Yup, welcome to the Real World(tm). All of the different imaging media
have tradeoffs, and some have more negatives than others (current digital
technology being one of the latter). But twenty years ago, consumer
digital imaging technology basically didn't exist. Photography has been
around since the 1840's or thereabouts. Where will digital be when it's
150 years old (I can't even begin to imagine). True virtual reality
inside your head with direct neural stimulation via ... ? :-)

Anyway, making allowances for the medium is part and parcel of the game.
Recording engineers are used to changing the mix and the equalization
depending on whether the material is for use on television, CD, or live
sound reinforcement, all of which have different requirements and different
capabilities. You can minimize the compromises by considering the medium
ahead of time (for low-res digital display, get close to your subject so
it fills the frame, etc.). Making the final image somewhat larger helps,
too.
