3D CD, Image Formats, and CD-RW

Just because I KNOW Dan will be sending a reply to Bob M's comments,
I figured I'd help him out a bit. Bob was suggesting marketing plans and
companies to do the CD printing, and although these have been suggested
before, Dan has assured us that the CD will be a 'vanity' CD with no
intention of creating a profitable product (just one to call our own) that
hopefully breaks even. He will be manually burning the CDs with a CD
Writer that he has access to. So Bob, you can forget the Ferrari...

As for the discussion of Image Formats on the CD, I have a feeling Dan
will be telling us (and correct me if I'm wrong) that he's going to leave it up
to the people submitting the images. The CD will be primarily in HTML with
all images linked from the 'web' pages. Existing web pages are what will
be used, so _presumably_ the existing images will also be included. That
means while browsing the CD, you can view any images that are available
as long as you have the capability to do so in the format they are already in.
I don't think Dan is going to be doing mass image file manipulations to be
sure that EVERY image on the CD exists in all of the different formats.

As far as CD-RW goes, this is from the Library Systems Newsletter that I
get at work (not that Dan is going to spend $600 for the hardware either):

Ricoh Shows CD-RW Hardware

Ricoh has been showing its new MP 6200S CD-Rewritable (CD-RW) drive
at hardware conferences around the country. The $599 unit is the first to
offer rewritable capability and a SCSI-2 interface. The finished CDs produced
on the system are compatible with existing CD-ROM players, and will also
be forward-compatible with future DVD players. [Contact: Ricoh; telephone

FWIW,

Adam
