Older Realists (like the Ilex) do not have witness marks.  It is a fact.

You know, if you depend on these marks to ID right and left images,
you can create your own mark and make it as deep as you like.  As a
matter of fact, I think it was Spicer who proposed this (and John B. 
liked it), you can mark two infinity points (one in left gate, one
in right) so you can quickly align your chips using constant infinity
separation.
