When using heat seal mounts, I keep two open mounts at a time on the
light box and place the chips directly in the mounts as they come off
the cutter.
Details: I cut the film strip starting at frame one, with the images
right side up, but reversed left-to-right (i.e. emulsion on the
bottom). This means I put the first chip on the left side of the first
open mount, the second chip is blank, the third chip goes to the left
side of the second mount, the fourth chip goes to the right side of the
first mount. At this point the first mount is full, so I roughly line
up the chips by hand, squeeze the mount together to hold the chips in
place, turn it over (the bottom of the mount faces forward in the
viewer) and preview the image in my viewer. If I like the image I put
the mount in a pile to be carefully aligned and taped later. I now
grab a new open mount (number three), cut the next chip and place it on
the left side of this mount. The next chip is for the right side of
the second mount, which is now full and gets previewed. And so on...
This method works well for me because the chips never get mixed up, I
get to immediately preview the results, and the slides end up in a pile
in the same order they were shot.
