Search software for the C3D

John R. wrote about the purchasing of search software for
the C3D.

I actually work in the database publishing industry and know
a good deal about that sort of thing. For a vanity CD such as
this one, it just plain isn't worth spending anything for such
software even though it would add to the value of it and make
it easier for the user to find something. That software does
tend to be pretty expensive, and I don't think Dan should
'shell' out for it. Either doing what I suggested (providing a
breif description after the link on the main page for web
browser search capability) OR using some other search function
of your own to find what you want looks like the way to go.
Windows 95's search function under advanced lets you search
files for specific keywords. Since html files aren't much more
than fancy text files, win95 should be able to find any files
containing your keywords. Similarly, I know there are unix
commands one could use to do the same thing. I don't know
about Mac or Win 3.1 though.

By the way, a number of people have mentioned CD-R's being
in the $6 range. If you're paying that much for them, you're not
getting too great a deal. They are going for as low as $1.99
since there are quite a few manufacturers offering good rebates
on those products right now. Such as at PC Mall
(www.pcmall.com), Fuji CD-R Media (74 min/650 MB) 10-packs
are $39.99 after a $25 rebate ($3.99 ea.) and MicroWarehouse
(www.warehouse.com) has 5-packs of Maxell 74 min/650 MB
CD-Rs for $9.95 after a $10 rebate ($1.99 ea.). Their websites
may also offer a discount if purchased on the web (I think PC
Mall has a 2% discount running now if you do that).

This should really help to keeps Dan's costs down.

FWIW,

Adam
