I am far from an expert, but I have worked with some.

At midrange to highend, the 90's lens will be made from superior optical
materials and use a more sophisticated design than the lens from the
fifties.  BUT, the 90s lens is also more likely to offer a wider
aperture setting, which, if you don't need it, can contribute to reduced
contrast at reduced aperture settings.

Reality is approximated by collecting and correcting the image in a
manner consistant with scientific and engineering principles.  However,
artists do not necessarily use such an approach, since art has creative
freedoms not appropriate for scientific or engineering work.

Do keep in mind Picasso's standard.

Any artist having mastery of their medium can depict a cow that looks
like a cow.

I also agree with if you want a snapshot, take a snapshot.  ie. this is
a hobby and your are not required to conform to anyones standards.
