As usual, salesman speaks with forked tonque.
The APS camera all take a fixed format (HDTV) just like most 35mm cameras (be
it 5 perf, 7 perf or whatever). All format selection does is annotate a
simplistic cropping scheme applicable to prints only, so when you get your
prints they are in the desired format at the expense of resolution.
The 40% number is also snakese. It compares the area of HDTV format to 3:2
35mm format. Compare 3:2 APS to 3:2 35 mm and you get a far less attractive
number.
So unless you can live with that simplistic cropping, just shoot HDTV format
and custom crop. Not cheap, but then no more expensive than 35mm in like
circumstances.
Please note that the HDTV format is not yet compatible with any viewing systems
except projection based systems but you can't buy slide film in North America
yet!!!.
I do expect that HDTV format will become more popular as it has many advocates.
For now, the cheap answer whould seem to be to crop the prints for Holmes
viewing, IMO. Please correct me here.
Please note that most scanning service available inexpensively for APS are the
equivalent of a megapixel CCD in terms of physical resolution and far less
accurate in hue, saturation, value than a megapixel CCD, whioch are available
under $1000 now.
APS film and cameras are capable of much higher than megapixel resolution, but
marketting (choke!) studies are quoted as seeming to indicate that the general
public doesn't care.
There are a number of schemes to scan APS with 35mm scanners to get better
physical resolution, but consult rec.photo.digital if you are really
interested.
