I have several (10)family photographs (Holmes type cards) of my father's
family taken in 1932. He said that the photographs were taken as part
of a deal when you bought a lighted Holmes viewer and several sets of
cards. The seller (a photographer I presume) would take the photos in
your home and provide them with the veiwer. He did remember that the
seller was itinerate. I read in a web site somewhere that this was quite
common in those times.
