Apparently, different flashes use bases of different widths.
Some flashes fit the Realist shoe without any problem, but
most flashes do not fit well.  Opening the shoe of the Realist
is a bit tricky.  Triming the base of the flash is also an option 
but, as Paul indicates, consider how is the flash going to work 
in your other cameras before trimming the base of your expensive 
flash.

You are right.  The only problem is that many modern/compact
flashes do not use a PC cord.  Reel 3-D's adapter works well
if your flash takes a PC cord and you remember to carry the
adapter with you.
