Hi Chris,

Welcome back to the list.

I've had a look at your web site (http://www.scripps.edu/~bruns/bc3d.html
for those who missed it). It looks pretty good, although I don't much
like anaglyphs. Of course using any other method would require much more
explanation about freeviewing.

You commented that jpg ruined your anaglyphs. There has been much
discussion concerning jpg for stereo shots in recent months. You might
try searching the archive for it. I'm afraid I've forgotten the URL
though.

The way most jpg compression routines work probably would degrade
anaglyphs though. The luminance data is stored at full resolution, but
the colour data is downsampled (effectively blurred) as one of the major
lossy compression steps. So yes, the effects you complained of are very
likely. You might be able to find a jpeg compression library which
doesn't do this but most do.

Higher image resolution might help, but Quickcams are low res devices as
you know.

If you've been out of touch for a while have you heard of jps files?
Effectively it is a jpg file containing a cross-eyed pair, which your
viewing program is supposed to display in whatever format you prefer.
Since the red/cyan filtration then occurs at the browser's end the
compression might not damage the stereo in the same way. The chief
disadvantage at present is that there is only a viewer available for
Win32. Netscape or Internet Explorer both display the images side by
side.

BTW I decided not to take you up on your kind offer of free glasses.
Since I live in the UK the postage would cost you.
