P3D Enlarging RBT Mounts

RBT MOUNTS
George Themelis asked a few days ago whether anyone has tried to enlarge
RBT mounts, and for what purpose.
In addition to the suggestions he lists, I have done this to achieve a
vertical opening of 23 x 33 mm which I used to mount film chips taken with
two synchronized cameras mounted vertically side by side. This of course
will be useful also for a single camera mounted vertically on a slide bar.
This allows a full frame viewing or projecting of objects that were shot
vertically and fill the full frame. (Practically speaking)
Although in my case, these mounts were precisely machined, it is possible
to use a sharp knife or end cutters to enlarge the opening of an RBT mount
sufficiently and then to use a very thin mask precisely cut from black film
to dress up the rough edges.
It is obvious that when enlarging the opening of a Realist size mount, the
essential quality of the mount, i.e., precision mounting, is lost, since
you cut away the sliding channels. So, the question remains, why do it? In
my case, I wanted consistency in the outer package so I can mix those few
special mounts with other mounts in the same batch.
I used Mylar tape to hold the chips in place between the black and white
halves.
This whole process is not recommended for routine mounting, but for those
special occasions when you need full frame vertical mounting and you want
to retain the outer packaging consistency. Either viewing in a Realist
viewer or a full frame viewer, or projecting the slides is done without any
further manipulation of the mount.
You are welcome to write to me for further details:
