20th Century-Fox had purchased the rights to
the Hypergonar process on December 18, 1952
and renamed it CinemaScope! Darryl F. Zanuck
realized it was an immediate, inexpensive (compared to
Cinerama) means of going to big, wide screen presentations.
They had hoped to make some money licensing the process
to other studios. By the mid-50s, 20th Century-Fox decided
to make ALL films in CinemaScope (How did those 4
in 1955 slip by?).
If the CinemaScope lenses had not been in short
supply, "Kiss Me Kate" would have been shot in
that process, instead of 3D!
Thanks for the time,
