I guess you are not familiar with the TDC 116. :-)  

Its slide carrier will accommodate slides 40 mm in height!!!!  

The dimensions of the openings of the 116 carrier are 40 mm x 40 mm.  
The height of the RBT mounts is 41 mm.  Almost the entire RBT mount 
height is seen through this carrier.

The only problem that I see with Shab's idea is that the projector
might be set so that the extra height spills out of the screen.
However, most portable projection screens are square.  If the
projector is centered and set to show the entire 36 mm width
of a slide, then it could also project the entire 36 mm height of
the "portrait" configuration.
