************************** WELCOME! **************************

The 3D photography e-mail list Revised November, 1997

*Please* save this message! It contains your list of instructions
for interacting with the photo-3d mailing list. Referral to it
when the inevitable questions arise will save you a _great_ deal
of time and frustration.

You have been added to list

   photo-3d@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx <--note address!
   ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

To post to the list, send mail to this address
(photo-3d@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx). In order for your messages to
be posted, you will have to send them from the address you used when
you subscribed. This requirement partially protects the list's
subscribers from mail bombs, bounces from unintelligent mailer daemons,
and advertising. If any of your messages is ever rejected, please
contact the list's owner: 3d-moderators@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

************************ LIST PHILOSOPHY ************************

The e-mail mailing list named "photo-3d" has been established for
the purposes of discussing 3D photography and closely allied subjects.
In this list, 3D is defined as the presentation of separate and
different images to the left and right eyes. This definition is not
intended to exclude lenticular presentations or the Pulfrich effect
or "wallpaper" stereograms. However, it _is_ intended to exclude
discussions of, for instance, perspective drawing and "ray tracing"
(often called 3D by people in other fields) and is also intended to
limit the discussion of holography to headlines only, inasmuch as
holography is a radically different technique. Unfortunately, this
is not the place to post 3D computer images; many subscribers cannot
afford to receive messages that large. We have available a number
of FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) in our ftp directory. Also in
the ftp site are a number of stereo image files. The ftp site is at:

    calcite.rocky.edu

The files can be accessed a number of ways, either thru a keyword
search engine via a web browser, or through anonymous ftp.

http://calcite.rocky.edu/photo-3d

Discussions of the following (in no particular order) are encouraged.

Topics:
3D art
3D equipment and products, both commercial and home-brew
3D personal experiences
3D techniques
3D theory

Media:
3D photographic stills and movies
3D television
3D computer graphics

Please limit your post's width to 75 columns or fewer so your posts will
look right to all list members. Here is what 75 columns looks like:

        10 20 30 40 50 60 70

Flaming and spamming are the two big taboos on this list and generally
result in summary dismissal. [We hate to be harsh but you have to realize
that this is an enormous list and managing it leaves little time for
individualized tutorials on the subject of list etiquette. If you have
any doubt about the advisability of a type of post, look and see if it's
commonly done on this list before leaping or write to the moderators.]

************************ LIST CONTROL INSTRUCTIONS ************************

You have a choice of how you receive the proceedings of this list. You
may elect to have posts delivered to you as we receive them (immediate
or "ack" mode) or you may elect to receive the "digest" which is the
collection of up to a day's posts.

This list is handled by listproc. It is capable of automatically handling
a number of requests. To interact with the list control program, send
e-mail to:

  listserv@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx <--- note different address!
  ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

No subject line is needed or desired. Put one of the requests shown
below in the body of the mail message. Response takes a minute or two,
not including possible e-mail delays. Below is a list of the requests
which you may put in the body of the message.

subscribe photo-3d your name
-----------------------------
Subscribe to the list. The default mode is digest reception. This
can be changed to immediate reception; see below. "your name" really
is your name - not your address. Your e-mail address will be pulled
from your message's header.

unsubscribe photo-3d
---------------------
Remove yourself from the list. Note that your name is _not_ given with
this request. You must send this request from the same address you used
when you subscribed. This keeps unatuhorized people from unsubscribing
you. (Remember that listproc looks at your mail header for your address
to identify you. You can't "talk" to the program and tell it, "Ignore the
header for a minute and listen to me." You _can_ send mail to the moderators.)

set photo-3d MAIL DIGEST
-------------------------
Sets digest mode. This will select the daily digest mode of traffic - the
articles are collected until they sum about 25 kb of information or until
the oldest article is 24 hours old. This mode can be very useful if you
are going on vacation and don't want to have to see a zillion messages
waiting for you when you get back. Others prefer this mode because they
don't have the time to read the list more than once a day anyway. However,
this mode does make replying to a message a little harder as it's somewhat
uncool and not very helpful to just hit reply and leave the subject line of
your message as Re: PHOTO-3D Digest #nnnn.

set photo-3d MAIL ACK
----------------------
Sets immediate mode. You will receive articles as they are posted.
This request is used to switch you from the digest mode to the immediate-
reception mode.

set photo-3d MAIL POSTPONE
---------------------------
Sets postpone mode. You will still be a member of the list but you won't
receive any postings from the list. Use this when you go on vacation and
_don't_ want to read the messages generated while you were away. When you
come back, set to ack or digest mode and you're back in business.

Note that if your address begins to have trouble and starts sending bounce
messages to the moderator group, the moderator group will first put your
address into digest mode, if it's in immediate mode, and then if your address
continues to bounce for a while in digest mode, you will be unsubscribed.
This is not to be construed as a personal attack on the subscriber! 8-)
It is merely a self defense action taken to prevent cluttering the moderators'
mailboxes with bounce messages.
