I am very skeptical that the problem could be in the cassette. The
positioning mechanism works by bouncing the light from an LED through
the filmstrip and back to a photocell. The light is interrupted by a
dark area on the film when it is positioned correctly on a frame. The
only way this could "go bad" is if you physically damage the cassette
or filmstrip in some way.
On the other hand, I have found the viewer to be very sensitive to
battery voltage. Even when the motor appears to be advancing properly,
the positioning mechanism may not function if the batteries are worn.
Try a fresh set and see if your problem cassette gets fixed.
A real problem with the cassettes is dirt. Even though I've retained
the original seals and replace them when the cassettes are off the viewer,
the films are getting dirty, and there's no way to clean the back side
of the film. :-(
