Huh?  At least around here (NYC), and most other places I've bothered
to look, B&W is considerably cheaper than color.  Film, chemicals and
equipment (if you do your own darkroom work), and processing (if you
don't) is much less than color (slides or prints).  If you're doing
custom prints at a pro lab with a lot of darkroom manipulation the
cost goes up, but the last set of (flat) Ilfordchromes (with no
manipulation) I had done was still more expensive than anything I've
done in B&W.

The film will last, but you probably don't want to bother hording
chemistry (which will go bad over time).  Better to buy (or mix your
own) as the need arises.

By the way, I doubt that slide film (or 35mm film) is headed for
extinction.  Slides have useful properties that negative and digital
systems don't.
