Check the Stereo Realist Manual, page 290, Fig. 18 "The Negative Approach".
This is from chapter 10 "Stereolusions" by Tommy Thomas: "Here's a final
suggestion.  Use ordinary negative film when making any of the tests that
you might find necessary.  By using 35 mm black-and-white film in your
camera you can make tests at a fraction of the cost of color film,  A
negative stereo (Fig. 18 for example) is rather a strange thing to
become familiar with, so try out a sample roll soon to discover its
posibilities."

Finally, a good use for B&W negative film!  Test out ideas before you
put them in color slide film!!!! :-)  If you plan to try "the negative
approach" I think you should overexpose and process for increased 
contrast.  The ordinary negatives are too thin to work well as slides.
