Many people posted on that group about several scanners. For the price below
$600 the undesputed leader is HP PhotoSmart, although it has its little
problems, like some noise on dark areas when scanning slides (no noise
for negs), bending the film, lack of control software flexibility,
annoying need to feed the film strip for each scan. Still the quality
is supposed to be very good for the price. Some people like Olympus ES-10
with parallel port interface or newer model with SCSI support.

If you have more money to spend, consider:

2.  Minolta QuickScan 35 $899.95 street price
    2820 DPI Resolution, 30 bit color scans
    Comes with Photoshop (full version?)
