There is another type available, too.  The one I have is from the
1950s, made by Kodak.  It is a spring-driven timer that
clips onto the end of a Kodak (straight thread) cable release.  
It presses down the thumb button on the cable release.
(I have a Kodak Stereo camera, and the cable release hole is too close
to the camera body for some timers that screw directly in the hole.)

I found self timers really hard to get- old/used ones anyway.
I searched the NSA 96 trade show & rooms and never found one, of either type.
