P3D More About Flakes

Joelİasked if I felt it was necessary to take snowfall shots from a
"sheltered" vantage point while using a flash. My answer is YES for
these reasons: My hand held flash pointed away from or parallel to the
camera during the time exposure. Since a snowflake is translucent, I
felt the use of a flash at any angle or distance to the camera would
"backlight" the flakes falling in front of the lenses and thus be
visible to the camera. Any translucent object held between your eye and
a distant light source (regardless of the light angle to the camera)
would be visible to the eye......and visible to the lense. In summary I
would recommend shooting from a sheltered area ( 6+ ft recession from
the snow)
using F8 (or good depth of field) using flash or time exposure or
combinations of both will create good results! If some flake deviations
exist especially at the outer edges of each image, you may not have been
far enough under the shelter. This can be corrected my mounting in a
smaller mount such as close-up or nimslo to crop out the deviations.
Good Luck MARK DOTTLE
