P3D PSSP Meeting

We got really "soaked" last night at our monthly PSSP meeting! Everyone
had to empty the water out of their squeaky sneakers. We got to see (a
first for me) a 3D video of the Titanic presented by Keith Moorehead of
National Geographic! Keith told us that they go down in a 3 man sub
with two cameras and lots of light (what a cool job!) It took 4 hours
to get to the ship, 8 hours filming, and 4 hours to get back. Sometimes
the film looked as if it didn't quite line up but most of the time it
was great! They also used spot flash to help align the film for
stereo. Although they shot film in color, Keith told us that on the
ocean floor you really lose a lot of color and black and white film
would offer much more definition in depth. (Please keep in mind I am
paraphrasing and am not a "technical" person.) He used two "Sharp"
lenses on two projectors that I cannot remember the names of. Adam?
John? Jeff? (P3D is starting to take over PSSP) Do you remember more
of the details? I believe the cameras were Beta Cams. They have filmed
other famous ship wrecks and plan to film some of the war time
battleship wrecks. Keith also said these videos are best viewed on a
smaller scale with no more than a room of 50 to 60 people.
Unfortunately, none of the videos are for sale and Keith said there are
no plans to do so. :^(
Next, we were "floating" beside two sharks inside each other's mouths
struggling over some bait. The voice over said that neither shark had a
scratch on him when the struggle was over.
Then we viewed some terrific slides taken by our members which Keith
Moorehead was kind enough to stay and help judge. I got to focus the
TDC this time. Our club has had our TDC altered to what looks like
tentacles with tiny knobs. This is so people can sit comfortably away
from the projector while focusing or adjusting horizontal and vertical.
I though at first this was a good alteration but found the focusing
tentacle to be less responsive than if you could just use the original
knob. Maybe it needs adjusting.
We ended our meeting with a somewhat confusing slide mounting workshop
presented by Bob Leonard. It seems we at PSSP still have a difference
of opinion of slide mounting. Mr. Duggan said he will try to clear
things up at the next club meeting. I must say, at times Mr. Duggan has
been cut off mid sentence while beginning to tell us how he took a
certain shot. One main reason I attend the meetings is in hope of
acquiring such knowlege. I hope he will get ample opportunity to
express his knowledge and years of experience with those of us that ARE
interested in what he has to say. Perhaps Mr. Duggan will be given the
respect and time that he has given to others.
