SIRDS are Single Image Random Dot Stereograms, invented by Chris Tyler, who
worked with Bela Julesz. Bela is the man who invented random dot stereogram
PAIRS in the late 1960's... Basically Mr. Julesz set out to prove that
binocular vision is not based on definable images, but parallax information
only (which he did!).

In the May/June 1990 issue of Stereo World Dan Dyckman wrote an article
about a SIRDS he'd discovered (probably by Tyler) and the method used to
create it. This turned out to be the catalyst for the incredible fad that
followed- unfortunately the NSA got little credit and even less in
financial reward! Dan himself came up with some 3D books, well overshadowed
by NVisions's posters and Magic Eye's books and calendars...
