P3D Realist Close up Lenses
- From: wier@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (Bob Wier)
- Subject: P3D Realist Close up Lenses

Since I'm at home and have access to some of the Realist stuff
that my folks collected, I thought I'd note the following for purposes
of getting it into the archive.
I have a set of close up lenses which will fit a standard 3.5 or 2.8
Realist. They consist of the holder, which could also be used for
standard filters, and the lens itself. Here's the scoop...
The holders are marked 'Kodak Series V Adapter Ring 3/4" - 19mm'
This is "press fitted" over the existing Realist lens (ie, friction
fit rather than screw on). The two halves of the adapter screw together
hold the filter inside.
The lens is a "Tiffen Photar Plus 3 Series #V" There is an arrow
on the side of the lens which points TOWARDS the Realist lens
when installed.
I have not looked at these probably in 25 years as they are in the
same case as the Steinhiel 25mm wide angle lenses. One kind of interesting
thing is that apparently the Steinheils were being marked by Realist, as
my accompanying instruction sheet (which is a blue ditto copy) has them
described as "ST513 Wide Angle Lens Attachment for Realist Cameras
models ST 41 & ST 42."
Other misc info from the sheet: the angle of field is 66 degrees on diagonal,
yielding an approximate 40% increase in coverage. The lenses accept 51mm
Series 8 adapter rings.
Lastly, there are actual REALIST series V type A orange/yellow filters.
I don't normally look at this stuff very often as I feel like the
REGULAR Realist lenses are pretty wide angle, forcing me to move
in much closer to my subjects that with a 35mm camera with 50-200 zoom
which I use for flat pictures. And of course I don't have a lot of
use for type A filters anymore, either. Since I tend to take stereo
photos of Victorian buildings, having to move in closer than "normal"
for photos usually means I'm standing close to the base of the walls,
which results in keystoning problems...
THANKS -- Bob W.
