P3D The Robe in 3D, yet again

I obtained a copy of John Belton's wonderful book "Widescreen Cinema."
(Harvard University Press, 1992. ISBN067495260X)

I found the following on p. 132:

"What only a few individuals in Hollywood knew was that Fox had also shot
-The Robe- in 3-D, just in case that format, which was sweeping the
industry when -The Robe- went into production, evolved over the summer
from a novelty into a new standard. [footnote] Though Fox took certain
measures to ensure it would survive the format war, its prestige rested
upon acceptance of CinemaScope by the industry, the press, and the
public."

[footnote] "In a letter to Jack Warner on March 5, 1953, (Darryl) Zanuck
acknowledged that 'I am looking each night at flat rushes, 3-D polaroid
rushes and finally the CinemaScope rushes on -The Robe-'"
Twentieth Century-Fox folder, Warner Bros. Archive."

====================================

My comment: The first paragraph is not at all ambiguous, and Belton seems
to be a fastidious researcher. The footnote, however - as we have
previously noted on this list - IS ambiguous, and awaits a reading of the
entire letter in the archive. Anyone in Los Angeles have some spare time?
