I wont claim to be an expert, but what has worked for me is to take the
screws, clean off the protective coating with laquer thinner, then hang
them over ammonia in a sealed container.  I use a piece of cotton twine
hung in the mouth of a jar, with about a half inch of regular household
ammonia in the bottom.   Dont let the brass contact the ammonia, and close
the lid of the jar.  It works over night, and gives a nice, aged look.
