Dialogue scenes are often shot from several points-of-view. Usually a "master"
shot is done from one perspective, to be used as a reference during editing.
Then, the scene may be shot again with a camera solely on one character; then
again with a camera solely on another character. Some of these may be shot at
the same time, depending on how the scene is "blocked" by the director (if the
actors are moving, their movement may cause one camera to become visible to
another camera).
Then, during editing, the editor will select from the multiple camera shots to
assemble the scene. Sometimes you will see an actor's face while he is
speaking; sometimes you will see a "reaction shot" of the character being spoken
to, and interspersed with those may be longer shots (possibly from the master
shot) showing both the characters at the same time.
Obviously if one were shooting in 3D, the amount of film used (and, more
importantly, wasted) would double, since all the unused footage ends up on the
cutting-room floor.
