P3D viewer optics alternatives

I haven't read all the digests yet for the last few days -
so forgive me if this has came up again in the discussion
of viewer lens quality.
Wasn't it suggested here a while back (and also in some
publications) that a pair of old camera lens can make for
some excellent viewer lens? I know that Alan Lewis' webpage
has a project where a set of surplus Revere lens are installed
into a cheap, steal-the-light viewer.
As a glasses wearer, stereo camera lens would be a tad too
narrow for my viewing needs. Has anyone else out there found
some cheap, wider, old pair of camera lens that worked well?
If so, what makes should we be on the look-out for?
BTW: I'm anxious to hear about Jon's new viewer line. If the
lens are real nice (and WIDE) I may try to hustle a few more
wedding $hoots to afford one :-) (Or, I'll examine
the cost/benefit ratio of contact lenses!)
