P3D Adjusting Realist focal plane
After two or three rolls of increasingly carefully focused shots on
my Realist 2.8, I've concluded that the focal plane focusing
mechanism is not adjusted properly, and I want to fix it myself. The
symptom: Even using the appropriate parfocal settings, the distant
parts of the shots are consistently out of focus. I've ruled out
camera motion. I haven't yet tried setting the focus at infinity and
shooting something with infinity in it, but instead I put infinity at
or inside of the "far" f-stop setting I'm using, and expect everything
from infinity to the near-distance marker that is just inside the
"near" f-stop setting to be in focus.
I've believed that I could set up a target at, say, ten feet from the
camera, put a ground glass (or frosty scotch tape) at the film plane,
open the diaphragm to its widest, and focus the target. Then, I
should be able to move the knob so that the indicator says ten feet,
and lock it down. Is that the right procedure? And if so, how do I
loosen the knob so I can change its setting without changing the
focus? Or should I leave the knob locked in at ten feet and adjust
something else to bring the target into focus? And is ten feet the
best choice, or should I be using three feet? or infinity? Thanks!
