P3D Re: Uses of Stereography
Greg M. is looking for ideas and examples of applications of
stereoscopy. A few months ago I asked for help to prepare for my
presentation on "Stereo Imaging in Science and Industry". I got quite
a few helpful responses and a number of fine images sent to me. I
have given this presentation two times already and one is coming up
next week. I summarized my thoughts on "Stereogram" 2.2. A good way
to classify these applications is to use the lens' separation. We
then have the following categories:
1. Normal Stereo (reproduce reality as seen by our eyes)
- Documentation/Maintenance
- Training/Education
- Presentation/Promotion/Marketing
- Remote Imaging
2. Hyperstereo (study large/distant objects, measure/reconstruct)
- Aerial/Terrestrial topographical studies
- Manmade objects (buildings, architecture, etc.)
- Natural objects of phenomena (clouds, moon, etc.)
- Reconstruction/Photogrammetry (industry, forensics, biomedical)
3. Hypostereo (study details of small objects beyond unaided vision)
- Macro (0.5-5x - "macro" lenses)
- Low Power Micro (5x-100x - micro lenses, stereo microscope)
- High Power Micro (>100, Electron microscope)
4. Artificial/Visual/Etc. (anything that does not fit above)
- Eye Testing - study perception
- Stereo Imaging of Displacements
- Retinal Rivalry
- Modeling in 3d (3d drawings, etc.)
I have built a library of images and I am constantly looking for more.
Examples include: documentation of industrial settings, machinery
(some from long time ago is in Keystone industrial cards),
promotional, clouds from plane, hyperstereos of buildings,
the moon (circa 1860s), Mars, a comet, photogrammetric aerial pairs,
SEM Stereopairs, stereoscopic drawings, mathematical/chemical models,
stereograms, etc.
