Geeze Peter, I've never actually examined one. I've been going on the
description given by others.

Absolutely!

I've been happy with the 3-D in the ones I've taken, but disappointed for
the reason you gave earlier; namely, that the color of your subject can be
critical.

This would result in an image which is graduated red to one side, cyan to
the other, and a reduction of the 3-D effect.
