Jordan Patkin is an avid collector of everything photographic and
stereophotographic, who I have been visited a few times in recent months.
Once he showed me a tintype (I think that's what it was supposed to be)
that he said he bought at a show. It was not stereo. He asked me to take
a close look at it, and give him my comments.
I thought that was odd, as I had never before seen such a thing, nor would
I know anything about them. But I looked at it for a little longer,
anyway. My curiosity was aroused, perhaps there was something hidden in
the image (a landscape), of humorous value. The image was rather faded,
low contrast, didn't appear very sharp.... Wait a minute, it looks like it
is screened! Now how or why would they have placed a screenend image on an
emulsion in those days? I asked.
Indeed. Jordan told me that it was a fake. This salesman had been
printing a screened B+W image onto the plate. Most people buying these
would not have noticed without a magnifier.
Of course, I doubt anyone would get away with that for very long with a
stereocard (plate).
Respectfully submitted,
